We raise 2 different types of chickens. We have Red Star and Black Star chickens.
We purchase them 100 at a time and raise them from 1 day old! It takes about 6 months before they start laying their first egg. The hens are called “pullet”. This term simply means she is a hen that is under 1 yr of age and just started laying eggs. Pullet eggs are the first eggs laid by the hens when they start laying and getting into the groove of it. They are much smaller than a normal sized egg but very quickly become larger. Everyday we tend to our chickens letting them out first thing in the mornings so they can cruise all day on pasture. Soaking up the sun (when we have it here in the PNW!) and snacking on bugs and at night we lock them up due to predators in the area. Each day we venture out to the coop and collect all the eggs our girls produce, making sure we have plenty available in the stand for you. If you happen to stop by and there are no eggs available most likely they have sold out for the day. No worries, you can simply go down the road to The Acme General Store where you can purchase our eggs as well. In the winter time our girls tend to slow down a little in production but come the Spring and Summer they will be laying in higher numbers.
